Greetings Icard Elementary,

A big thank you to all who helped make various events, including parent night, Jump Rope for Hearts, academic excellence, and duty-free lunch,  a huge success this week.  Your support helps our students be successful!

We have a relatively quiet week ahead of us except for all of the learning that is going to be taking place.

P.T.O. coin wars will begin Monday, February 18, and run through Thursday, February 28.  Students are encouraged to bring in coins and even paper money to go into their class jars.  The K-2 class and 3-5 class with the most money collected at the end of two weeks will receive a reward.

Be on the look out in take-home Tuesday this week for a flyer outlining Icard’s “Read Across America” Spirit Week.  Family Reading Night will be held on Tuesday, March 5.

Don’t forget to donate gently used children’s books and appropriate adult books for the used book sale which will run from March 5 through March 7.

Have a great week!

Greetings Icard Elementary,

I hope that you have had a great weekend!  We have several events taking place in the next several weeks of which you need to be aware.

Please send in canned food for the superintendent’s food drive.  We have not had many items brought in thus far, so make sure you remember to send in any type of canned food.

NC Check-ins for third, fourth, and fifth grades will be conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week.  Like the first round, these are important assessments to let teachers and you know how students are progressing with their mastery of the curriculum.  There is no stress with these assessments. Students will not be graded.  This is simply a time for them to shine and show what they know.  Make sure your third, fourth, and fifth graders get plenty of rest the week!

Whole class pictures will be Wednesday, January 30.  Please dress appropriately.

Remember to send in gently used children’s and appropriate adult books for our used book sale which will occur the first week of March.

Do not forget the parent night we have coming up on Tuesday, February 12. The focus of this meeting will be assessing and what you as a parent need to know.  We will be serving a light meal that evening free of charge beginning at 5:30. The program will begin around 6 to 6:15.

Friday, February 15, we will be holding an academic excellence ceremony for the second nine weeks beginning at 1:30.  Third through fifth-grade students will be honored.  Kindergarten through second grade will receive awards in their classrooms.

There are some parent conferences taking place at this time.  If your student’s teacher requests a conference, please be sure to make time to attend.  Your involvement is crucial to your student’s success.

Thank you for entrusting your child to us.  Have a great week!

Good evening Icard Elementary,

It was wonderful having the students back at school this week!  They were ready to learn, so we got down to business.

Please congratulate fifth-grade teacher, Ms. Wanda Hege, for being chosen by her colleagues as Icard’s 2018-19 Teacher of the Year.  Good luck to her as she represents Icard at the county level!

Currently, we have mClass assessing taking place in kindergarten through third grades.  Beginning January 14, kindergarten through second grade students will be assessed in math, and on January 29, 30, and 31, our third through fifth-grade students will be completing their middle of the year NC check-ins.  These assessments will help teachers to see how students are progressing with the standardized curriculum. If you have any questions, please contact your student’s teacher or the office.

The nine weeks ends on January 18, so please encourage your student, especially those in third through fifth grades, to get all work completed!

Looking down the road, IES will once again be having its used book sale.  This event will take place the second week in March.  Ms. Smith has requested that if you have any gently used children’s or appropriate adult books, please consider donating them to this cause.

Have a great week!

There are several reminders for this week.  Make-up pictures will be taken Monday, December 3.  Also on Monday, our fourth graders will be traveling to Biltmore House in Asheville.  They will return to the school at approximately 5:00 P.M.  On Tuesday, December 4, our third graders will be traveling to Old Salem.  On Thursday, December 6, Zane, Dakota, Lannie, and Samuel will be representing Icard Elementary at the Burke County Speech Contest being held at the Old Rock School in Valdese.

Looking ahead, Icard Elementary will be having a dance on Tuesday, December 18,  from 3:00 until 4:00 P.M.  All students are encouraged to attend and participate; however, if your student has any outstanding debt, including lunchroom debt, he or she will not be able to participate.  Debts must be cleared by Friday, December 14, to ensure your student will be able to attend.  If you have extenuating circumstances concerning your debt, please contact me so a plan can be arranged.

As always, thank you for entrusting your children to us!
