Good afternoon Icard Elementary,

I hope you enjoyed your day off on Friday! We have a busy and exciting week ahead of us.

Monday, October 15, will be the last day of our fundraiser. Students will need to turn in ALL orders and demo books. Some students’ demo books have been used to fill orders, but those that have not been used need to be returned. Remember that coupon books are twenty dollars each.

We will be celebrating spirit week. If your child paid four dollars for the entire week or pays one dollar per day, he or she may participate in the day’s activity. Monday will be Crazy Hat Day. Tuesday will be Costume Day. Wednesday will be Crazy Hair Day. Thursday will be Favorite Device or Stuffed Animal Day. Friday will be Pajama Day. Please note that costumes should not be scary, have a mask, or cause a distraction to the educational process. All proceeds will go to support the United Way of Burke County. Be sure to look for Ms. Burris on Tuesday!

Tuesday evening, October 16, Icard Elementary will host its annual Math-O-Ween. We will begin the festivities with pizza in the cafeteria at 5:30. Reservations were due Thursday, October 11. Our math activities will be in the gym beginning at 6:00 and lasting until 7:00.

Our fourth graders will travel to Morganton on Thursday for the symphony. Please be sure that your student has turned in a permission slip for this event.

As always, have a great and safe week!

Greetings Icard Elementary,

What a great week we have had!  I want to shout out a BIG thank you to all parents and guardians who came out this week to support your child for “Bring a Parent to P.E. Week.” We had more than 60 parents participate! I would also like to thank the Peacock family for the fabulous decorations they have added to the front of our building.

Here are just a few reminders for the upcoming week:

1.     Your student’s instructional day runs from 8:00 A.M. until 2:45 P.M. Please DO NOT CHECK your student out after 2:00 P.M. unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary because of a doctor or dentist appointment or family emergency.  Your child is being instructed until the end of the day.  If you are checking out your child for reasons other than what is ABSOLUTELY necessary, YOU are shortchanging him or her.

2.     The second fill day for the fundraiser will be Thursday, October 11.  This is a change from what was previously stated.  Please DO NOT send in envelopes until Thursday, October 11.  Holding off until Thursday will help avert confusion as to how orders are filled. THANK ALL OF YOU for the HARD WORK you have put into making this fundraiser a success. Please be mindful that all demo books need to be returned on October 15, the final day of our sale. Several students have already returned the demo books. Some of the demo books have been used to fill orders.  A record has been kept of this.

3.     For safety reasons, ALL afternoon car riders need to be picked up in the appropriate line. We complete the bulk of the car rider line within 15 minutes of the first loading.  If you have an extenuating circumstance, please contact the office, and we will make appropriate accommodations.  Again, PLEASE think of the safety of ALL students.

4.     THANK YOU for your patience as we have transitioned to having two buses.  Make sure that your student knows how he or she needs to get home in the afternoon.

5.      Fall pictures will be taken on Thursday, October 11.  Please be sure to fill out the pre-order form before then.

6.     Friday, October 12 is a teacher workday.  Students will NOT report to school on Friday.

As always, thank you for the support you continuously give to Icard Elementary!

Greetings Icard Elementary,

It has been another busy and productive week at Icard.  We began the week with our school spelling bee.  Congratulations to fourth-grader, Lanie D., for winning.  She will be representing us on Monday, October 22, at Patton High School at the county spelling bee.

Friday, September 28, students received their fundraising packets.  As I stated last week, the leadership team decided to follow the path of traditional fundraising for this year.  Icard Elementary will receive 50% profit for each coupon book sold.  Everyone is fully engaged in this process. I have sold several books and so have many of our teachers because we know that these funds will ultimately benefit our students.  I would love to see an average of 3 books per student sold.  The first round of ordered coupon books will be sent home Friday, October 5. Thank you ahead of time for your efforts to help us be successful!

I am very excited to share with you that beginning Monday, October 1, we will be adding a new bus.  The new bus number is 178, so now, we will have buses 178 and 211.  Students who have been riding the first load will arrive home at the same time but on bus 178.  The biggest time change will be with our second-load students. Second-load riders will be arriving home up to 45 minutes earlier than they previously have been.  Thank you for your patience as we have worked to make this change a reality!

Progress reports were sent home this last week.  I enjoyed reviewing each report to see how our students are doing.  We at Icard take our partnership with parents and guardians seriously to ensure our students succeed. Please make sure your student is present and prepared for class each day.  If you ever have concerns, please contact your student’s teacher or the office.

Have a great week! Please see the information on the school webpage and Facebook page concerning parents coming to school for physical education during your student’s assigned class time.

Good afternoon Icard Elementary,

I hope that you have had a great weekend! I know that several of our students had ballgames. I hope that did your best and succeeded. Here are just a few reminders for the week.

Monday, September 24, our fourth and fifth graders will be participating in the school spelling bee beginning at 9:00 A.M. in the gym. Parents of participants are invited to attend. Tuesday, September 25, is a very important day. Our first interim reports will go home. Parents, please check take-home-Tuesday folders for these reports. Contact the teacher or the school concerning any questions you may have in reference to these reports. Thursday, September 27, our fourth graders will be going on a field trip to Catawba Meadows to engage in the Overmountain Victory Trail commemoration of the revolutionary route patriot militia used to help pave the way to American independence.

Friday, September 28, all Icard students will attend an assembly to kick-off our fundraiser for this year. After much discussion, the leadership team decided to once again sponsor a traditional fundraiser. Icard Elementary students will be selling coupon books. The profit for each book sold will be 50% which is more than the 40% from sales in previous years. It would be fantastic if we could average selling 3 coupon books per student. The funds made from these sales help to supply the necessary money the following:
1. Awards and recognitions
2. Field trips
3. Extracurricular activities
All of these aforementioned items focus on our students and serving them. Please consider this, as we work together to be successful.

Have a great week!

Good evening Icard Elementary,

I hope that you have weathered Florence well.  We have had a fabulous week at Icard!  Our third grade successfully completed their BOG3 with the highest scores in the county.  We had an awesome turn out for our first parent night of the year with one hundred and eleven families represented.  This is a record!  Our goal for the book fair this year was $5000.00.  Guess what?  Preliminary counts are showing that we grossed approximately $6282.00! Way to ROCK IT Icard Elementary!

On Wednesday, students will have an opportunity to learn about the Scouts of America Program.  Sign-ups for scouts will be held in the Media Center on Thursday, September 20, from 6:00 until 7:00 P.M.

Rain continues to be in the forecast.  We will be following a rainy-day dismissal in the car rider line on days that this is necessary.  Please be patient on these days!

I want to encourage ALL stakeholders (parents, grandparents, community members) to help with our Caring for Coltsinitiative.  We are always in need of individuals to come in and read with our students.  There is no better way to ensure a quality future for yourself than to help in the education of those who will be providing your future, the children of Icard Elementary.  Fill a volunteer form out as soon as possible!

We will be on a two-hour delay for students and staff for Monday, September 17

Thank you, and have a great week!

Happy Weekend Icard Elementary,

We had another great week rocking it out at Icard. This next week will be extremely busy, so please mark your calendars!

Tuesday, September 11, will be a big day for our third graders as they take the NCBOG3 (North Carolina Beginning of Grade 3) assessment. The data from the assessment will be used to guide reading instruction for your child as he or she progresses through the third grade. You will receive a letter Monday, September 10, with a more in-depth explanation of this assessment. Please make sure that your third grader gets a good night’s sleep on Monday.

Tuesday evening, you will have the opportunity to come to Icard for a free hotdog supper, the book fair, and an informational session on how to help your student succeed this year. Parents will also be able to sign up for PTO. Supper will begin at 5:00. Reservations for this supper were due Friday, September 7. It is important for you as a supportive parent to attend and stay until the end so you can be as prepared as possible to help your child as well as all Icard students this year.

Thursday, September 13 and Friday, September 14, grandparents will be able to eat lunch with their students. Reservations for Thursday’s and Friday’s lunches were due Friday, September 7, so we could plan accordingly.

I look forward to seeing you this week!
