Greetings Icard Elementary,

I hope that you have had a good week.  We have had great fun as we have started reading Winter According to Humphrey as a school.  Remember to keep up with our progress by asking your child each day what has happened with Humphrey!

There are several reminders for this week.  Make-up pictures will be taken Monday, December 3.  Also on Monday, our fourth graders will be traveling to Biltmore House in Asheville.  They will return to the school at approximately 5:00 P.M.  On Tuesday, December 4, our third graders will be traveling to Old Salem.  On Thursday, December 6, Zane, Dakota, Lannie, and Samuel will be representing Icard Elementary at the Burke County Speech Contest being held at the Old Rock School in Valdese.

Looking ahead, Icard Elementary will be having a dance on Tuesday, December 18,  from 3:00 until 4:00 P.M.  All students are encouraged to attend and participate; however, if your student has any outstanding debt, including lunchroom debt, he or she will not be able to participate.  Debts must be cleared by Friday, December 14, to ensure your student will be able to attend.  If you have extenuating circumstances concerning your debt, please contact me so a plan can be arranged.

As always, thank you for entrusting your children to us!

Good afternoon Icard Elementary,

I hope that you have had a good week.  We have had another very productive week at Icard.  Students have continued working hard to learn skills that will help them be successful as they proceed in their educational journeys.

Four of our fourth and fifth graders were chosen as winners for the school speech contest and will represent Icard at the county competition to be held on Thursday, December 6, at the Old Rock School in Valdese.  These students are as follows: Zane Taylor-Prose, Dakota Goodwin-Poetry, Samuel Keaton-Original Composition, and Lannie DiMatteo-Notable Speech.

Parents, you did an awesome job showing support for your child in that you participated in parent-teacher conferences.  THANK YOU!

On Tuesday, November 20, beginning at 1:00 P.M. in the gym, third through fifth-grade students will be recognized for their hard work during the first nine weeks of the 2018-19 school year at the academic excellence ceremony.  Parents and grandparents are invited to attend this ceremony and celebrate their child’s success.  Students will be allowed to leave with parents at the end of the ceremony, but students must be signed out if the ceremony concludes before 2:30.

Remember, there will be NO SCHOOL on Wednesday 11/21, Thursday 11/22, and Friday 11/23 to observe the Thanksgiving Holiday.  Eat plenty of food, rest, and return to school on Monday, November 26, ready to learn!  Thank you!

Second, the school speech contest will be held Tuesday, November 13, beginning at 8:15 in the gym. Parents of participants are invited to attend.  Thursday, November 15, our fourth graders will be traveling to Biltmore House.  They will be returning to school at approximately 5:00 P.M.  Parents of fourth graders, please make arrangements to pick up your child at this time.

Good afternoon Icard Elementary,

I hope that you remembered to set your clocks back and have enjoyed your extra hour of sleep this weekend!  Hopefully, those early morning bus stops will not be nearly as dark.

A few reminders for this week include the following:

Students will not attend school Tuesday because of parent/teacher conferences.  Many of you may have scheduled alternate times, but the bulk of the conferences will be held Tuesday, November 6.  Unless otherwise scheduled, teachers and staff will be at Icard beginning at 11:30 A.M. and remaining until 7:00 P.M. Teachers have until November 15 to complete conferences.  100% participation is required.  Thank you for your cooperation and support of your child.

Thursday, November 8, our first graders will be taking a field trip to Johnny Wilson Farm in Granite Falls.

Mark your calendars for Monday, November 12.  Students will not have school because of the observance of Veterans Day.

Thank you, and have a great week!

Good afternoon Icard Elementary!

I hope that you have had a great weekend! We certainly had a busy week with benchmarks, field trips, and community helpers.  I am always so excited for community members to come in and see the high caliber of students we have at Icard!

As we enter cold and flu season, make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep, washes hands regularly, and consumes plenty of fluids.

Because I firmly believe that education is a socio-economic equalizer, I am including two links in this communication on how important reading to and with your student is. (You can access these articles through the Icard Elementary FB page or the school webpage).I am also highlighting two statements I found to be especially important.

"Students who read the most will read the best, achieve the most, and stay in school the longest. Conversely, those who don't read much, cannot get better at it."
Jim Trelease

“One of the most important things parents can do, beyond keeping kids healthy and safe, is to read with them.”
Amy Joyce

You will need to schedule a time with your child’s teacher for a conference between October 31 and November 15.  If you fail to conference with your child’s teacher, a home visit may occur.

Our kindergartners and first graders will be attending a play on Thursday.  Our Pre-K will be visiting an apple orchard on Friday.

Thank you for entrusting your children to us!

Greetings Icard Elementary,

What a wonderfully exciting and productive week we had last week!  I personally and thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the students in a fun but service-oriented way as we all engaged in Spirit Week!  We collectively raised close to one thousand dollars for United Way.

I especially thank all of you who participated in Math-O-Ween.  Over 33% of our students were represented at this event. Parents and guardians, participation in these types of activities is so important in promoting the success of your students!

We will be having NC Check-in benchmarking for our third, fourth, and fifth, graders this week.  This is a benchmark.  These assessments are not for grading; they simply give teachers information as to how students are progressing in their attainment of specific knowledge.  Your job is to simply get your well-rested student to Icard on time each morning.

Kindergartners will be going to Divine Farms on Thursday, and on Friday, community helpers such as firemen, policemen, nurses, and more will be presenting to our kindergarten through second graders.

Have a great week Icard!

We are extremely pleased with the amount of students and parents participating in the P.E.A.K. CLUB (Physical Education for Adults and Kids.)  If you are participating in the activities, please complete the activity papers as you do the activities.  Please wait until all activities are complete, then turn them in on the last few days of the month. Enjoy being active together!
