New Message from Mrs. Burris!

Good afternoon Icard Elementary,

I hope that you have had a great weekend! I know that several of our students had ballgames. I hope that did your best and succeeded. Here are just a few reminders for the week.

Monday, September 24, our fourth and fifth graders will be participating in the school spelling bee beginning at 9:00 A.M. in the gym. Parents of participants are invited to attend. Tuesday, September 25, is a very important day. Our first interim reports will go home. Parents, please check take-home-Tuesday folders for these reports. Contact the teacher or the school concerning any questions you may have in reference to these reports. Thursday, September 27, our fourth graders will be going on a field trip to Catawba Meadows to engage in the Overmountain Victory Trail commemoration of the revolutionary route patriot militia used to help pave the way to American independence.

Friday, September 28, all Icard students will attend an assembly to kick-off our fundraiser for this year. After much discussion, the leadership team decided to once again sponsor a traditional fundraiser. Icard Elementary students will be selling coupon books. The profit for each book sold will be 50% which is more than the 40% from sales in previous years. It would be fantastic if we could average selling 3 coupon books per student. The funds made from these sales help to supply the necessary money the following:
1. Awards and recognitions
2. Field trips
3. Extracurricular activities
All of these aforementioned items focus on our students and serving them. Please consider this, as we work together to be successful.

Have a great week!

Good evening Icard Elementary,

I hope that you have weathered Florence well.  We have had a fabulous week at Icard!  Our third grade successfully completed their BOG3 with the highest scores in the county.  We had an awesome turn out for our first parent night of the year with one hundred and eleven families represented.  This is a record!  Our goal for the book fair this year was $5000.00.  Guess what?  Preliminary counts are showing that we grossed approximately $6282.00! Way to ROCK IT Icard Elementary!

On Wednesday, students will have an opportunity to learn about the Scouts of America Program.  Sign-ups for scouts will be held in the Media Center on Thursday, September 20, from 6:00 until 7:00 P.M.

Rain continues to be in the forecast.  We will be following a rainy-day dismissal in the car rider line on days that this is necessary.  Please be patient on these days!

I want to encourage ALL stakeholders (parents, grandparents, community members) to help with our Caring for Coltsinitiative.  We are always in need of individuals to come in and read with our students.  There is no better way to ensure a quality future for yourself than to help in the education of those who will be providing your future, the children of Icard Elementary.  Fill a volunteer form out as soon as possible!

We will be on a two-hour delay for students and staff for Monday, September 17

Thank you, and have a great week!

Happy Weekend Icard Elementary,

We had another great week rocking it out at Icard. This next week will be extremely busy, so please mark your calendars!

Tuesday, September 11, will be a big day for our third graders as they take the NCBOG3 (North Carolina Beginning of Grade 3) assessment. The data from the assessment will be used to guide reading instruction for your child as he or she progresses through the third grade. You will receive a letter Monday, September 10, with a more in-depth explanation of this assessment. Please make sure that your third grader gets a good night’s sleep on Monday.

Tuesday evening, you will have the opportunity to come to Icard for a free hotdog supper, the book fair, and an informational session on how to help your student succeed this year. Parents will also be able to sign up for PTO. Supper will begin at 5:00. Reservations for this supper were due Friday, September 7. It is important for you as a supportive parent to attend and stay until the end so you can be as prepared as possible to help your child as well as all Icard students this year.

Thursday, September 13 and Friday, September 14, grandparents will be able to eat lunch with their students. Reservations for Thursday’s and Friday’s lunches were due Friday, September 7, so we could plan accordingly.

I look forward to seeing you this week!

Happy Labor Day Icard Elementary,

First and foremost, remember that we will have no school tomorrowMonday, September 3!

On Tuesday, Pre-K students will have dental screenings, and all students will be bringing home some VERY important papers in their Take-Home-Tuesday (THT) folders. Students will have two reservation tickets that they will need to return by Friday. The first reservation ticket will be for our book fair evening, Tuesday, September 11. Hotdogs will be served free of charge to all who attend, but parents must fill out a reservation form with the total number attending so adequate plans can be made. Dinner will begin at5:00 P.M. From dinner, parents can accompany students to the 2018 Icard Book Fair until 6:15. At 6:15, all attendees will go to the gym for an informational meeting on Title 1 services and how to help students be successful at school. At approximately 6:30, parents and students will be able to go to individual grade levels for additional information on being successful this year.

The second reservation ticket will be for grandparents who want to have lunch with students on Thursday, September 13 or Friday, September 14. Again, it is imperative that these reservation tickets are turned in so food can be ordered.

Information on joining the PTO will also be in this week’s THT folders. Research shows that parent involvement on any level is critical for students to be successful in school. DO NOT PASS UP THIS OPPORTUNITY to show your child that you care.

We had a FANTASTIC first week, and I expect it will be the first of many this year.

Good evening Icard Elementary,

Can you feel the excitement in the air?  Yes, it’s that time of year again: the beginning of school.  Tomorrow evening, Thursday, August 23 from 4 until 6, you will have opportunity to bring your child to meet his or her teacher for the upcoming year.  You will also have a chance to
• sign up for PTO.  (Please take advantage of this to show your child that you want to be involved.) A table will be set-up in front of the school.
• check bus routes if you need to do so. A table will be set up in the Media Center.
• fill out lunch forms if you to do so. A table will be set up in the Media Center.

If you are the parent of a first grader, your child may be in a combination kindergarten and first grade.  The students for this class have been hand selected to ensure the highest potential for their academic success.  The K1 combination class will once again be taught by Miranda Duncan.  She had great success with the K1 class last year.

Please make every effort to come join us tomorrow.  The Icard Elementary family is very excited to be able to partner with you to help your child have a successful year.   Thank you, and have a great evening!
